The Cottage Above holiday cottage near Kirkcudbright

Relax and enjoy the peace and quiet at this detached rural cottage, overlooking a small private loch. The cottage is in a peaceful private position amidst beautiful rolling farmland in the heart of picturesque Dumfries and Galloway.

Kirkcudbright

Kirkcudbright lies in a sheltered position on the River Dee estuary on the north Solway coast. Approximately 30 miles west of Dumfries, Kirkcudbright is easily accessible from the M6/A74(M) road network, and is approximately 50 miles from the ferry port of Stranraer and the Irish Sea ferries.

Fishing

Just 300 yards from the cottage is our private loch which is available for fishing at £10.00 per rod, per day, by arrangement.
There are also a wide range of fishing opportunities in the region including sea-fishing, fresh water rivers and numerous lochs.

Walking

Enjoy a peaceful stroll in our private, secluded gardens or explore the local area on foot and get close to nature. The region has over 200 miles of coastline, with stunning cliff top walks, or leisurely walks along sandy beaches.

There are also miles of forest walks and trails on gentle slopes or, for the more experienced, rugged hikes to the top of the Galloway hills and mountains to enjoy some spectacular views

Broughton House & Garden (3 miles)
An 18th Century town house, previously the home of the renowned artist E A Nornel, features and art gallery and studio that overlooks the Japanese influenced garden.

Buckland Plants (2 miles)
Family run nursery just a short distance from the Cottage, Buckland Plants grow a wide range of border and woodland perennials and alpines.

Threave Garden & Estate (8 miles)
Threave gardens are famous for their daffodils, heather garden, herbaceous beds and plant centre. The estate has walks, nature trails and a countryside centre. It is also a wildfowl refuge.

Cally Gardens (10 miles)
A specialist nursery with a labelled plant collection of around 4000 varieties in an 18th Century walled garden, surrounded by the Cally oak woods.

Castle Kennedy Gardens (45 miles)
Extensively landscaped picturesque gardens with terraces, mounds and avenues covering more than 30 hectares and set between two natural lochs. Famous for its rhododendrons and plants from all over the world.

Logan Botanical Gardens (65 miles)
Logan lies at the south-western tip of Scotland, and it is unrivalled as the country’s most exotic garden. Because of the influence of the Gulf Stream, a remarkable collection of bizarre and beautiful plants flourishes outside, making this Garden a plantsman’s paradise.

Cycling

Dumfries and Galloway has over 400 miles of signposted cycle routes, voted as the best maintained in the UK. Country road cycling and mountain biking is very popular in Dumfries and Galloway which has some of the best cycle routes in the country.

Ride the 7 Stanes
Big country riding, rolling hills, views to die for and mile upon mile of technical singletrack – it's all here in the south of Scotland, some of the world's best biking, guaranteed. In nearby Dalbeattie, you can tackle route 3 which includes the Hardrock Trail (intermediate), Moyle Hill Trail (intermediate/easy) and Ironhash Trail (easy).

Wildlife

Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park
Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park is 2 miles from The Cottage Above, set in 27 acres of mixed woodland. Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park is the wild animal conservation centre for southern Scotland.

A varied collection of nearly 150 animals from all over the world can be seen within the peaceful and natural settings where the woodland has been tailored to provide large and imaginative enclosures.

Art & Crafts

Kirkcudbright was, and still is, home to generations of creative artists, painters and craftspeople including George Henry, Edward Hornel and Jessie M King. This has led to it being called "The Artists Town".

In the early 20th Century, Kirkcudbright was the home for many famous artists, many of whom were from Glasgow, including George Henry, Edward Hornel and Jessie M King. The town became known as "The Artists’ Town".

In recent years, Kirkcudbright Town Hall has been the venue for temporary exhibitions over the summer months as part of efforts to promote the town as a centre of artistic excellence.

Tolbooth Art Centre
The Tolbooth Art Centre is in Kirkcudbright's 17th century Tolbooth which previously served as the Town Council Offices, Burgh and Sheriff Courts and Prison. The Tolbooth provides gallery accommodation and exhibitions of the Museum Service's painting collection including works by Charles Oppenheimer, Jessie M. King, S.J. Peploe and, Robert Sivell.

Castles & Historic Attractions

Caerlaverock Castle
Caerlaverock (Lark's Nest), one of Scotland's finest castles, is everyone's idea of a medieval fortress. The scene of two famous sieges, this moated castle has a children's adventure park, model siege engine and nature trail in its grounds. Caerlaverock Castle also has a siege exhibition and café.

MacLellan's Castle
MacLellan's Castle is a tower house building constructed during the later part of the 16th century. Defences were provided by wide mouthed gun loops at lower levels and pistol-holes. MacLellan's Castle is open to the public between Apr - Sept.

Events & Festivals

Galloway Children's Festival
Usually held in the first week in July, the Galloway Children's Festival includes magic shows, music shows, storytelling, puppets, dancing, drama, bouncy castle, face painting, side shows and stalls, workshops and much much more.

Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities
Held throughout June, July and August, Kirkcudbright is host to a feast of traditional performances and energetic entertainment including Scottish nights in the Harbour Square on Thursdays, Children's Festival and culminating in the Tattoo in the shadow of the castle on 29th August.

Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival
Held each year, usually in the middle of June, the Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival attracts many visitors who usually enjoy music from 30+ groups, in venues throughout the town. There is also a Brolly Parade and Church Service.
